The first step has passed! Finale - construction of modern 20 km long bicycle paths on the grounds of the former sand line of the CTL Group. 23rd December this year a letter of intent was signed in which representatives of the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis expressed their intention to purchase land running through the former Poniatowski - Wujek and JCC Poniatowski railway line to create metropolitan bicycle routes.
- "CTL Logistics is actively involved in the revitalization of post-mining areas, which is why we accepted the cooperation offer without hesitation. We are convinced that the sale of land for the construction of new bicycle routes will serve the local community, "emphasizes Grzegorz Bogacki, President of the Management Board of CTL Logistics.
- "When planning the construction of Velostrada, we want to use the potential of the disused railway lines. It is a chance to give them a second life and revitalization of post-industrial areas - says Karolina Mucha-Kuś, Director of the Department of Projects and Investments. The cooperation with the CTL Group is key here to realise our plans for the construction of Velostrada - she adds.
Thanks to the sale of real estate to the metropolitan authorities, the space will gain new ecological functionality. The residents will get a new, attractive location alternative to daily communication and active recreational tourism.
20 km of bicycle paths - in-line areas yesterday and today
The new bicycle route is to run across the administrative boundaries of the cities of Katowice and Mysłowice. The land is currently under the management of CTL Maczki-Bór S.A., a member of the CTL Logistics Group since 2001. The former entity called Kopalnia Maczki-Bór Sp. z o.o. from Sosnowiec, currently the CTL Maczki-Bór Company, was formed from the Przedsiębiorstwo Podsadzowych Przemysłu Węglowego in Katowice.
The Company's assets included, among others 1000 ha of land, including areas built up with a sand railway about 130 km long. They formed a network of railway lines running along the cities of Zabrze through Ruda Śląska, Chorzów, Katowice, Mysłowice, Jaworzno, Sosnowiec as well as Imielin and Lędziny. The railway infrastructure fulfilled an important communication function for the region, enabling the transport of filling sand between the hard coal mines operating in Silesia and the Maczki-Bór sand quarry.
At present CTL Maczki-Bór S.A. seeks to gradually revitalize the remaining sections of the railway infrastructure on the management board, intended for various activities. For example, a new express road was created on the land next to Wujek - Maciej, located in the former Wujek - Maciej line, the Road Cross-Country Route (colloquially called the "cross-city road"). The similar bicycle construction projects - albeit on a smaller scale - resulting from the transformation of their original rail functionalities, were implemented in previous years in Ruda Śląska and Katowice.
